Differential Diagnosis

History: A potassium hydroxide preparation is used to confirm the diagnosis of a superficial fungal skin infection. Adding black or blue-black ink to the potassium hydroxide solution highlights fungal organisms and distinguishes them from surrounding cellular debris.
