History: A Herpetic whitlow is due to herpes simplex infection of the pulp of the finger.Before the routine use of rubber gloves it was seen most commonly in dentists or dental assistants.In children most cases are HSV1 from primary oral herpes simplex  while in adults 75% of cases are HSV2.
