Differential DiagnosisHistory: Ochronosis is characterised by the bluish black discoloration of certain tissues caused by the deposition of homogentisic acid in the connective tissues. It occurs in alkaptonuria, but has also been observed in connection with exposure to certain chemicals (e.g., phenol, trinitrophenol, resorcinol, mercury, picric acid, benzene, hydroquinone, and antimalarials).
