History: Onycholysis is spontaneous separation or loosening of the nail plate from the nail bed usually starting from the distal free margin and progressing proximally.  Although many conditions can lead to onycholysis, prolonged exposure to irritants, trauma, and moisture are the most common causes.  Onychomycosis, psoriasis, lichen planus, eczema, and pemphigus vulgaris are the dermatological conditions that may involve the nails with subsequent onycholysis.
