Differential DiagnosisHistory: Gonorrhea is infection of the lower genital tract caused by a sexually transmitted microorganism, Neisseria gonorrhoeae. The infection results in purulent inflammation of the mucous membrane surfaces and manifests as male urethritis and female endocervicitis. In neonates, bilateral conjunctivitis (ophthalmia neonatorum) often follows vaginal delivery by an infected mother.
