History:

This one-year-old child developed erythema, fissuring and maceration of the oral commisures asociated with excessive drooling.

Angular stomatitis, angular cheilitis, cheilosis or perleche is usually associated with the collection of moisture at the corners of  mouth encouraging invasion by candida and/or other micro organisms. In children, this is often caused by lip licking, drooling, thumb sucking and mouth breathing. Elderly may be affected by this condition due to age-related changes in oral architecture like sagging of the perioral skin and poorly fitting dentures.
