Differential DiagnosisHistory: Discoid Lupus Erythematosus is characterised by red scaly patches on the skin in sun exposed areas. If the scale is carefully lifted it may be seen extending down into the hair follicles giving the carpet tack sign.Discoid lupus causes damage at the epidermal junction destroying melanocytes and causing hypopigmentation and scarring. It may also damage hair follicles giving patchy baldness. The man above had the condition for many years before it was diagnosed correctly.
