History:

Imported fire ants were native to South America, but ultimately entered the United States thru Mobile, Alabama. They have now spread across the entire South, but also can be found further North each year as their domain expands. The ants do not bite, but rather sting while they rotate on their necks while grasping the skin with their mouths. The toxin, solenamine, causes an intense itch-burn sensation, and each sting leaves a distinct pustule. This patient was stung while doing yard work outdoors.
